Home-Start Walsall

Home-Start Walsall supports families within the Borough of Walsall who have at least one child under the age of 5. Support is through home-visiting volunteers who offer practical and emotional help, as well as groups and social events.

Pathways Covered

Children and families

Overview

Home-Start started in 1973. We were founded by Margaret Harrison who believed that supporting a family was best done in their home where it can be shaped to the needs of the family. She realised that if parents get support and friendship from another parent, they will be better equipped to learn to cope with the many difficulties life can bring, and will be able to give their children the best possible start to their own lives.

While this idea remains at the heart of our work, we have created new ways of helping parents and their children to meet the changing needs of families.

What we do

Our values

  • We offer families choice.
  • We work in partnership – with each other, with families and with other agencies.
  • We work in a spirit of openness, encouragement and enjoyment.
  • We are flexible and responsive to the needs of families.

How to access

If you are working with a family who you think could benefit from the support of Home-Start you should:

  • Discuss Home-Start with the family – they must agree to receive support.
  • Most Home-Start teams work with families with children under five. An increasing number of Home-Starts support families with a youngest child older than five, so you should still discuss the family with your local Home-Start.
  • Check whether there is a Home-Start in your area and contact them to find out about their referral process.

Once you have referred a family to Home-Start we will:

  • Set up an initial visit with the family to discuss their needs
  • Carefully match the skills and experiences of a volunteer to the needs of the family
  • Introduce the volunteer to the family
  • Let you know when Home-Start support starts and ends
  • Keep you informed about progress
  • Monitor and assess their support
